Ray Pabon, from Lockport and Gary Herman, of Corfu, opened their new can and bottle redemption center at 3050 Niagara Falls Blvd. in July 1st 2011, and business is already booming thanks in part to a new state law passed last year creating a deposit on water bottles.
With all the heat, it’s perhaps no surprise that mountains of water bottles were among the roughly 40,000 cans and bottle that sat sorted in the new business on Monday.
The two business partners are each retired civil servants.
Their new bottle recycling center caters to anyone who cringes at the thought of loading and unloading bags and boxes of bottles, hauling them into a grocery store and getting their hands sticky after waiting in line to crunch each, one at a time, into a traditional bottle return machine.
Then there’s the line to redeem those tickets and get paid.
“We want people to know that when you’re standing at those machines you’re working for the grocery store,” Herman said.
That’s because bottle recycling centers at grocery stores, just like Wheatfield’s Bottle Junction, get a fee of between one and three cents per bottle and can from their respective distributors, even though the customer still gets the full 5 cent deposit.
About 30 barrels lining the inside of the rented space, right next to Brydges Chiropractic correlate to a different distributor.
None of what the distributors pay Bottle Junction comes out of the deposit consumers expect.
But the difference, Herman said, is that a Bottle Junction, they do all the sorting, and there are rarely any lines. They’ll even come and help you unload the sticky cans and bottles and nobody makes you wait while each is being crushed.
“Especially the older people who come in – we go right out there and help them bring them in,” Pabon said.
Their plans include expanding to open more locations in the area, and hiring sorters and clerks in the process.
